Description

Objectives: The objectives are to transform the discipline of SE to meet the emerging challenges and increase its relevancy. Specifically, to (a) provide a systematic understanding and assessment of current and emerging state of research and practices in SE, (b) identify the gaps that need to be addressed to enable rapid, effective fielding capability through compressed development & deployment time and increased operational effectiveness, (c) create an integrated, modular 3-Year roadmap for an SE methodology and toolset to address these gaps, and (d) document the findings and roadmap in an actionable final report to drive this transformation.

Application: The findings from this research identified a number of critical research areas including: SoS Modeling, Affordability & Value Analysis Tools, ICES: Integrated Concept Engineering Systems, and Agile Systems Engineering In addition, this research was used as a primary reference source for RT20 SE Vision 2020 and is currently being used as a primary reference source for the Systems Engineering Vision 2025 project sponsored by INCOSE.

Significant Research Findings & Products: The analysis of existing SE MPTs has identified significant gaps and a set of eight research thrusts to begin addressing those gaps. These research thrusts are the core components of an integrated, modular road map toward SE transformation. A workshop held with the sponsor confirmed the relevance of these research thrusts and provided the necessary input that resulted in their refinement and the creation of the overall framework.
