Objectives: This research proposes the development of an analytical construct to forecast resilient options and a tradespace toolset framework architecture in support of Engineered Resilient Systems (ERS). This includes conducting research and development of methodologies to include Needs Context based Utility Functions, and risk mitigation of uncertain future events through option buy-ins. Next, this effort investigates various toolset usability upgrades, building on Georgia Tech’s experience in building web-based, collaborative systems engineering frameworks, in light of related stakeholder requirements and use cases. Finally, this work will explore a series of ERS Architecture tradespace toolset concepts which would be co-developed between Georgia Institute of Technology, the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), and related stakeholders.
Approach: The research involves various usability upgrades to tradespace toolsets, building on past experience in building web-based, collaborative systems engineering frameworks to address new stakeholder requirements. The research will also develop a series of Engineered Resilient Systems tradespace toolset concepts. The project will:
- Develop a Needs Context analytical construct to allow utility functions to score alternatives. This will be used to capture resiliency of a system design across competing or changing requirements on its performance attributes.
- Develop a methodology for engineering risk assessment associated with selection of components or alternatives given uncertainty in future needs.
- Develop specific aspects of the ERS tradespace software architecture.
- Facilitate a workshop to enable ERDC to use the toolset to conduct tradestudies of interest. This task will include proper deployment of the toolset on ERDC servers.
- Extend the work conducted under Task 19 to develop an API between Georgia Tech and Army Research Labs frameworks, to include analytical constructs evaluation of resiliency in a scenario context.
- Support NSWC Carderock Division to integrate models and data/information developed at NSWC-CD updated beyond an original FY13 study. This will result in an updated ship model characterization, and updated modeling tools to study the ship example.
- Engineered Resilient Systems Tradespace Toolset, integrated into the wider Engineered Resilient Systems Software Architecture
- Documented research methods describing contributions to the analytical constructs necessary to define “resilience”
