Description

Objective: To assess whether it is technically feasible to transform systems engineering using a fully formalized Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) approach (i.e. model-centric engineering) with integrated and interoperable models to associated simulations, surrogates, digital assets, and supporting environment with application to NAVAIR

Approach:  The work to be performed is:

  • Applying and refining the measurement instrument to quantify responses from Government, Industry and Academia related to the topic of the most holistic and advanced uses of model-centric engineering
  • Constructing the “Vision” and “As Is” model and relating and extending it based on discussion results
  • Integrating a risk framework into the “Vision”
  • Developing some usage threads based on case study data

Consistent with Phase I of the research, the research team will continue to incrementally deliver the desired results, including continuing its joint efforts through working sessions. In this way, the on-going research will be informed by the application of the results and then the research will be tailored to newly discovered needs going forward. This should enable NAVAIR to create a plan informed by the research results for implementation relatively early in the results cycle.

ApplicationProvides a guideline for how to transition an organization to a more holistic model-centric approach to systems engineering. The early results through the discussion are identifying challenge and gaps where additional research should be tasked.
